As I embarked on a series of Classic Holidays Nile Cruises, I was prepared for the breathtaking views, the ancient history lessons, and the picturesque sunsets. What I wasn’t prepared for, however, was the stunning array of culinary delights that were to be served along this ancient river, the very heartbeat of Egypt. These memorable culinary adventures on the Nile turned out to be more than just a feast for the eyes.
Each meal was an education, a journey through Egypt’s rich history – each dish revealing layers of Egyptian civilization. Egypt’s culinary traditions are deep-rooted and incredibly varied, influenced by its geographical location and the myriad civilizations that have shaped its culture.
The Egyptian Breakfast
Our days often started with an Egyptian breakfast of ‘Foul Medammes’, a slow-cooked fava bean dish served with egg, bread, and often accompanied by fresh local cheese. There was also ‘Tahini’, a creamy paste made from sesame seeds, drizzled with olive oil and served with warm bread – a delicious way to start the day.
Koshari – The National Dish
No visit to Egypt would be complete without tasting ‘Koshari’, a delicious combination of lentils, rice, pasta, fried onions all layered and topped with a special tomato-vinegar sauce and garlic juice. This dish, which is often called the national dish of Egypt, is a hearty staple known for its satisfying mix of flavors and textures.
The Freshness of Seafood
The Nile isn’t just the lifeblood of Egypt, it’s also home to a wealth of fish species, making seafood a favourite among locals. We were treated to a variety of fresh, flavorful fish dishes that showcased the diversity of Egypt’s river and sea life. These included ‘Sayadieh’, fish served over aromatic rice with caramelized onions, and a delightful dish known as ‘Samak Mashwi’, which is essentially a perfectly grilled and spiced fish.
Sweet Finale
And what better way to end a meal on the Nile than with a sweet treat? We indulged in ‘Basbousa’, a traditional semolina cake soaked in a sweet syrup, and ‘Kunafa’, a decadent dessert made with thin pastry strands, creamy cheese filling and a drizzle of sweet syrup. Each sugary morsel was a testament to the simple yet incredibly satisfying sweets of Egyptian cuisine.
Ultimately, dining on the Nile was about more than just the food. It was about the stories shared over meals, the friendships made, and the memories created. These culinary adventures were as much a part of the journey along the Nile as the visit to ancient ruins and the awe-inspiring sunset views.
Our Nile cruise was truly a culinary voyage, an exploration not just of Egypt’s vibrant flavors, but also its rich and varied culture, its history and its people. So, the next time you find yourself in Egypt, be sure to embark on your own culinary adventure. You won’t regret it.
